Thank you to everyone who joined us in May at the Waterford Preservation Celebration. In honor of National Historic Preservation Month, the Waterford Foundation, Waterford Citizens Association, and Waterford 2033 put on this celebration for all things Waterford!
Visitors enjoyed refreshments and conservations with fellow Waterford preservation-minded people, learned more about past and upcoming projects at exhibits around the room (including the John Wesley Community Church, Waterford Mill, invasives on Phillips Farm, and more!), and listened to the address from the amazing keynote Brett Glymph, Executive Director of the Virginia Outdoors Foundation.
The largest celebration of the day came with the redesignation of the Waterford National Historic Landmark. At the same time, a cloud hung over the air with the announcement of Waterford on the Most Endangered Historic Places list by Preservation Virginia in 2024 due to the imminent threat of transmission lines. But, all hope is not lost but renewed for preservation in Waterford- as a community of passionate people are ready to advocate for the continuation of preservation here.
Finally, our Historic Preservation Director gave a toast to preservation in Waterford. “To me, historic preservation is not stagnant, but instead is a choice, a path that has to be taken every day. Every day, every time a threat comes up, or someone questions why you would spend so much time in historic buildings talking about brick work- you have to remember the history of where you are and how to keep that alive for the next generations.” says Abigail Zurfluh, Historic Preservation Director.
Thank you all for your support of Waterford Preservation in May and all year long!
