Opportunities are available for a wide range of interests and time commitments. Most of our volunteer opportunities are for adults, but projects for children and students can be arranged with advance notice.
Volunteer Opportunities
Second Street School Program

Help us provide our living history program to 1500 4th grade students each year by portraying Miss Nickens, the Second Street School teacher. This is a great volunteer opportunity for retired teachers who want to stay engaged in education. Volunteer shifts are mostly during weekdays in the fall and spring, from about 9:30 am until 1:00 pm. Training is provided and volunteers are expected to provide their own costume appropriate for an 1880s school teacher, such as a floor length dark skirt paired with a white button down blouse. Tour Guides and Homes Tour Docents
Lovers of history may especially enjoy lending their time as walking tour guides and/or homes tour docents. Walking tours are conducted as requested with advanced notice. Training is provided. Homes Tour docents work one or more 4 hours shifts during the Waterford Fair and are provided with a script in advance of their shift.
Historical Research
Interested in Waterford or Loudoun County history or enjoy digging into primary documents? Waterford has many possible research projects available. This is also a great opportunity for students. Projects will be tailored to the interest of the volunteer and will require meetings with our local historian to arrange.
Archives and Local History Collection
Anyone experienced with working with archives and primary documents may be interested in helping with the Waterford Foundation archives.
Waterford Fair
2018 Fair Volunteers at Photography
The Waterford Fair is the first full weekend of each October. It’s a great time to be in Waterford as a volunteer! Volunteers get to attend the Fair for an additional day for free and have fun on the day they work. Opportunities include being a docent in a historic home, working with the Art shows, food, wine, or behind the scenes. Shifts range in time commitments from just a few hours to all three days.
Phillips Farm
The Phillips farm is a wonderful nature preserve in Waterford that is protecting the original land and viewsheds of the village. You can help tend walking trails, control invasive species, monitor bluebirds, monitor water quality, as well as other projects as they come up. Some of these volunteer opportunities are managed by our partner, Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy.
