Loudoun Transmission Line Alliance
Thank you for your support! Come on out to our community gathering in October to hear more about the next steps moving forward to continue to preserve Rural Loudoun!
Information on the Lansdowne Conservancy and the Golden to Aspen Line
Our friends at the Lansdowne Conservancy and the Piedmont Environmental Council have asked for support for Loudoun SCC hearing on the Golden to Aspen Line on September 5th. Please consider writing a letter to the SCC in support of underground the Golden to Aspen line- Rt 7 application. Please note that this hearing has nothing to do with NextEra, First Energy, or the line proposed in Rural Loudoun.
What is the Golden to Aspen Line? The Golden to Aspen Line proposed by Dominion Energy is to serve the growing energy demand from data centers in eastern Loudoun. This large dual circuit 500kV and 230 kV line would connect two new electric substations called “Aspen” (near the Phillip A. Bolen Memorial Park south of Leesburg) and “Golden” (west of Sterling). The proposed line would run north to Rt. 7 and along the southside of Rt. 7 corridor on 180-foot tall monopoles.
Why go underground on the Golden to Aspen Line? The Lansdowne Conservancy is advocating for undergrounding of the transmission lines in between the Aspen and Golden substations to preserve the quality of life, historic resources, viewsheds, and character of the region for the residents, businesses, and visitors. The call for undergrounding has been supported by many organizations, including the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. To learn more about why to go underground, watch this video created by the Lansdowne Conservancy on the subject (run time, approximately 15 minutes).
How can you help? It is important that the SCC hears from as many concerned community members as possible before making a decision. Please consider sending in public comments on the Aspen to Golden Line (note that this SCC hearing has nothing to do NextEra, First Energy, or the lines proposed in rural Loudoun). You can submit public comments online or in person at the Loudoun SCC hearing. Comments can be submitted online through the SCC’s online comment form (linked here) by September 10th. The Loudoun SCC hearing will be held on September 5th from 6-10pm at Belmont Ridge Middle School. The SCC is asking people who plan to speak to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the 6pm start time as it is expected to be a well attended event.
New 500KV power line in rural Loudoun County impacts all residents now and for future generations.
Rural Loudoun, despite developmental pressure, has remained a haven for agriculture and agritourism, open spaces, environmental conservation, and historic preservation. Building transmission lines through Rural Loudoun would impact all of Loudoun’s residents (past, present, and future), our environment, and put our historical legacy at risk.
As part of the Mid-Atlantic Resiliency Link, PJM Interconnection has awarded a contract to NextEra Energy based on their current proposal to build a new 500KV transmission line power corridor in Rural Loudoun. The Loudoun Transmission Alliance calls upon NextEra to reconsider their plan and build transmission lines within existing power corridors.
